How to mount TV on the wall

Mounting your TV on the wall can be an intimidating project and a high priority on your Honey do list. Despite what you may think mounting your tv on the wall was much easier than I expected and was very straight forward.  In order to complete my Honey Do list projects I decided to share with you my experience on mounting our Vizio TV in our Loft.  These 3 tips will help you mount your TV to wall in one try.

  • Getting the Right Wall Mount
  • Where to Mount TV on Wall
  • How high to mount TV on Wall?
  1. Getting the right wall mount for your TV and Space

Wall Mounts vary in size, type and movability.  In most cases the space you are looking at mounting the Tv and the size of your TV dictate what Wall mount you will want to purchase. For example, if you are wanting to mount a 50-inch Vizio TV you will want to purchase a TV wall mounting kit that has a range of sizes that includes a 50-inch TV.

Secondly, it is important to decide what type of wall mount fits your needs. There are three main types of TV wall months. They are listed in the table below:

TypeDescription and potential Uses
fixed bracketsDoesn’t Move, and is fixed in its location. Great for a TV room where the TV can be mounted at the right height. Downside is you cannot move this to reduce the glare.
tilting bracketsTilts up and down, Great when mounting your tv above a fireplace or higher on the wall. Also, a great option to reduce glare by tilting the TV.
full-motion bracketsAs the name suggests it can move in most directions. These kinds of TV wall mounts can pull out off the wall on an arm, can Tilt the tv up and down and can turn the TV from right to left to fit a space. Great for mounting TV in a corner or when you are needing to pull the tv out based on your available space and walls.

During my honey do list project we purchased a full motion Sarus TV wall mount kit because of our loft’s unique setup.

The size of your TV and the type of mount you choose help determine how much to mount TV on Wall. The price of the kits generally increases as the tv size increases. So, mounting your TV on a wall could cost between 20 dollars and as much as 150 dollars. Lastly and to follow up be sure to purchase the right type of wall mount for your needs and the right size range.

Tip: Most TV mount kits come in a size range so if you are planning on upgrading your TV to a bigger size, we recommend to get a mount that can increase in size to be greater than your current TV. I have a 50-inch TV but I bought a kit that ranged from 42 to 85 inches so that I could upgrade to a larger TV when I wanted without needing to buy another kit.

  1. Where to Mount TV on Wall?

When you start your TV mounting Honey Do project it is important to understand where to Mount the TV on the Wall. Most TV Wall mounting kits require you to mount your TV where you can screw the brackets into studs or into a brick wall. In most cases and especially as the TV get bigger drywall cannot hold up the TV and will break under the weight. Therefore, when choosing the location, you will be mounting your TV you will want to find the studs beforehand so that way you can purchase the best Kit for your situation. There are 2 ways in which these kits are attached to the wall. The first ways are to a single stud and the second way is to multiple studs. Using a Stud Finder locate the studs and if there is a single stud in the middle of your wall, I would recommend buying a kit that will allow you to mount your TV to a single stud and similarly if there isn’t then use the two-stud system.

  1. How High to Mount TV on Wall?

Lastly, the height of your mount is key to having a successful honey do project. Generally, the ideal height to mount your TV on wall is 43 inches to the center of the TV when viewing from a couch.  This however is a rule of thumb and can be adjusted to fit your needs. In our project we needed to have the tv higher on the wall in order to keep it out of the reach of my children. The height of you TV mount should also be determined based on the height of you your TV console. In most cases we recommend mounting the tv with a 5 to 10-inch gap from the top of the console to the bottom of your tv. So, to answer how High to mount tv to a wall we recommend between 43 and 55 inches from the floor to the center of the TV.
